Living in Milton Ernest
Milton Ernest is about five miles north of Bedford, on the east bank of the Great Ouse, with the A6 running past. Around 760 people lived here at the 2011 census.
For a small village it has some striking buildings. Milton Ernest Hall, designed by William Butterfield in the 1850s, is the only complete country house he ever built, and it’s Grade I listed. All Saints’ Church, also Grade I, goes back to the 12th century. Altogether there are 24 listed buildings in the parish, including Milton Mill and Radwell Bridge.
There’s a wartime footnote too. On 15 December 1944 Glenn Miller was last seen in public at the Queen’s Head in the village, before flying out from nearby Twinwood.
Milton Ernest CofE Primary School is a small village school on Thurleigh Road, and older children go to Sharnbrook Academy. The village hall is next door to the school. The 50 bus runs between Bedford and Rushden Lakes, and the A6 makes the drive into Bedford quick.
