Living in Wootton

Wootton is a big village south-west of Bedford, made up of a string of old ends (Bott End, Church End, Hall End, Keeley Green and Mount Pleasant) with the hamlet of Bourne End. It’s grown a lot, from about 1,250 people in 1901 to over 4,000 at the 2011 census, and plenty of people who live here work in Bedford or Milton Keynes.

The village has a long brick-making history, and in the 18th century church bells for parishes across the county were cast here. St Mary the Virgin is mainly 14th century, and a few old timber-framed houses survive among the newer streets. Wootton Park, built by Bovis, Bellway and Taylor Wimpey, added around 600 homes, and more are planned beside the A421.

For families there’s a lot on offer: a recreation ground with a floodlit games area and a large skate park, several play areas, allotments, a library and four community halls. Wootton Blue Cross FC has been going since 1887. Schools in the area are changing from three tiers to two: Wootton Primary now runs up to age 11, and Wootton Upper is becoming Wootton Academy, with sixth form at Kimberley College in nearby Stewartby.

The Uno C1 bus runs to Bedford and Milton Keynes, and the A421 is quick for the M1.
