Living in Sandy

Sandy is a small market town about eight miles east of Bedford, on the River Ivel, with the A1 running along its western edge and the A603 heading straight to Bedford. Just over 12,000 people lived here at the 2021 census. The name comes from the sandy hills to the east, part of the Greensand Ridge.

It goes back a long way. Sandy was a Roman settlement, and an Iron Age hill fort known as Caesar’s Camp looks down over the town. The centre is a conservation area, with St Swithun’s Church, its medieval tower intact, and a town hall from 1906.

The RSPB has had its headquarters at The Lodge since 1961, and the reserve there is the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire, home to nightjars and natterjack toads, with trails and a cafe.

For commuters, Sandy station is on the East Coast Main Line, with Thameslink trains twice an hour through central London to Gatwick and twice an hour north to Peterborough. Buses run to Bedford via Willington. There are four primary schools and Sandy Secondary School, and newer estates such as Fallow Field and Ivel Park sit alongside older housing. It’s popular with London commuters who want lower prices than towns further south.
