Living in Little Staughton

Little Staughton is in the far north-east of Bedford borough, about eight and a half miles from the town and four and a half from Kimbolton. It’s a long, linear village, with houses lining the road that runs north from Colmworth for more than a mile. Around 440 people lived here at the 2011 census.

All Saints Church is Grade I listed and Norman in origin. It stands on its own on high ground, away from the houses, and lost its spire to lightning. The village’s other story is the war. RAF Little Staughton was built in 1942, taking 20 buildings at the Top End with it, and it flew Mosquitoes of 109 Squadron and Lancasters of 582 Squadron. The control tower still stands, and the rest of the site is now mostly an industrial park.

The Crown on Green End is the one pub left, and it now brews its own beer. The village hall opened in 1984. There’s no school in the village, with Great Staughton Primary Academy the nearest.

The 28A bus runs to Bedford. Little Staughton suits anyone wanting a properly rural spot with a good local pub.
