Living in Higham Ferrers

Higham Ferrers is a small market town in the Nene Valley, joined to Rushden on its southern side and about thirteen miles north of Bedford. Nearly 8,900 people lived here at the 2021 census.

It has a lot of history for its size. The town received its first charter in 1251 and a second from Mary Tudor in 1556, and it sent its own MP to Parliament until 1832. Henry Chichele, Archbishop of Canterbury and founder of All Souls College in Oxford, was born here around 1364, and he founded Chichele College and the Bede House almshouses in the 1420s. St Mary’s Church is 13th century and Grade I listed, and the Market Square has a town hall from 1809. The High Street has been a conservation area since 1970.

Schools cover every age: Higham Ferrers Nursery and Infant School, the junior school, Henry Chichele Primary, and The Ferrers School for ages 11 to 18. The Green Dragon on College Street is an 18th-century hotel with a large garden.

The A6 and A45 meet here, so road links are good, and Rushden Lakes is close. The Stagecoach 50 runs to Bedford, and the nearest station is Wellingborough, about four miles away.
