Living in Haynes
Haynes is about seven miles south of Bedford, in Central Bedfordshire, with Cotton End and Shortstown to the north. It used to be called Hawnes, and it’s in the Domesday Book as “Hagenes”. Around 1,200 people lived here at the 2011 census, and the hamlet of Haynes Church End has its own conservation area.
The grand house is Haynes Park, built around 1725 for John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville, and now Grade I listed. James I was a regular visitor to the manor that stood before it. St Mary the Virgin Church, with its Carteret Chapel, was largely rebuilt in 1850.
The Greyhound on Northwood End Road was built in the 1780s as the Dog and Butcher. It’s a family pub with a big garden, a play area and a petanque court, right beside the John Bunyan Trail and close to the Greensand Ridge Walk. Haynes Lower School is in the village, and this is a three-tier area, with Robert Bloomfield Academy in Shefford for middle school.
Buses on the 9A, 9B and 9D run to Bedford and Hitchin. Haynes suits families and walkers who want a quiet village within easy reach of Bedford.
