Living in Great Barford
Great Barford is about five miles north-east of Bedford, on the River Great Ouse. It’s one of the larger villages around the town, with around 2,250 people at the 2021 census, and it’s growing.
The river is the heart of it. A stone bridge had replaced the old ford by the early 15th century, and the medieval bridge still carries traffic today. The Anchor Inn sits beside it, next to All Saints Church with its 15th-century tower. There are three conservation areas, and the village is in the Domesday Book with several mills.
Day to day, there’s Great Barford Church of England Primary Academy, a village hall built in 1923 as the war memorial, shops, a second pub in the Golden Cross, and a bowls and petanque club. Playing fields host football and cricket, and the Great Barfest brings the village together every year.
For getting about, the A421 bypass runs past the village, west towards the M1 and east to the A1 at the Black Cat. Buses run to Bedford, and the 905 goes all the way to Cambridge. Older children usually go to Mark Rutherford School in Bedford.
It’s a good choice for families and commuters who want village life without giving up easy road links.
