Living in Cople
Cople is about three and a half miles east-south-east of Bedford, just off the A603 Sandy road. Around 720 people lived here at the 2011 census. At the junction with the main road stands a toll house from about 1770, one of only two left in Bedfordshire.
All Saints Church is Grade I listed and was first built soon after 1087 by the de Beauchamp family. The village name is said to come from “Cock Pool”. Cople House, the old manor, burned down in 1971, and Woodlands Close was built on its site a few years later.
The Five Bells on Northill Road is the village pub, a Grade II listed 17th-century building that’s been licensed since 1750. It’s named after the church bells, although a sixth was added in 1949 as a war memorial. There’s a village hall too, and Sheerhatch Primary School on Willington Road serves both Cople and Willington.
Several bus routes, including the 72, 73 and 74, run into Bedford. Cople suits families who want a village school a few minutes from town.
