Living in Carlton

Carlton is north-west of Bedford, on the south bank of the Great Ouse, facing Harrold across the long medieval bridge. It joined with neighbouring Chellington in 1934, and the parish had just under 1,000 people at the 2011 census.

The old part of the village is a conservation area laid out as a rectangle of roads: Bridgend, the High Street, The Moor and The Causeway. Newer homes from the 20th century fill the land in between, around Rectory Close, Carriers Way and Beeby Way. Chellington’s old church, St Nicholas, now stands by itself and makes a fine sight across the lake from Harrold-Odell Country Park.

Carlton CofE Primary School on The Moor takes children from two, and older ones go on to Sharnbrook Academy. The Fox on the High Street has been named CAMRA’s local Pub of the Year twice. There’s a squash club, opened by Brian Clough in 1980, a play park, and an Emmaus community with a cafe and second-hand shop.

Harrold-Odell Country Park is just over the river. Buses run to Bedford on the 25.
