Living in Cardington

Cardington is tiny. At the 2011 census fewer than 300 people lived in the parish, which makes it one of the quietest corners of the borough. The village centre has been a conservation area since 1970, built around a green and the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which has 12th-century work inside even though most of it was rebuilt around 1900.

The name is known well beyond Bedford because of the airship sheds. Short Brothers put up the first in 1915, and the R101 was built here before its crash in 1930. More recently the Airlander 10 was developed at the same site. The village also has links with the brewer Samuel Whitbread and the prison reformer John Howard.

The King’s Arms on the green dates from 1783. The parish hall started life in 1862 as an industrial school. Bedford Town FC and Bedford FC both play on Meadow Lane, inside the parish, and the UK’s first artificial slalom canoe course is next to Priory Country Park.

Homes don’t come up often in a village this size. If Cardington’s on your list, it’s worth getting in touch early.
