Living in Colmworth

Colmworth is about six and a half miles north-east of Bedford and five miles west of St Neots. Colmworth Brook splits it into Church End and the smaller Chapel End, and fewer than 400 people live in the parish.

If you want countryside, this is it. The CPRE puts Colmworth among the darkest skies around, and there’s a 12-acre country park by Manor Farm with a wildflower meadow, orchard, pond and bird hide, plus footpaths out towards Wilden and Bolnhurst. The Colmworth and North Bedfordshire Golf Course has 18 holes and a floodlit driving range.

St Denys’ Church was built in the 1420s by Sir Gerard Braybrook and dedicated to France’s patron saint in honour of his French wife. The old Wheatsheaf pub is now the Cornfields Restaurant and Hotel, a 17th-century listed building. The village hall seats 120 and has a playing field and play area behind it.

There’s no school in the village now, so families drive to nearby primaries. The 28A bus runs into Bedford from Monday to Saturday, and St Neots is the nearest station. Colmworth suits anyone who wants space and quiet and doesn’t mind a drive.
