Living in Roxton
Roxton is about seven miles north-east of Bedford and four miles from St Neots. It’s small, with under 350 people at the 2011 census, and wrapped on two sides by the Great Ouse. Roxton Lock and a string of lakes left by gravel digging make it a lovely spot for walks, and the Ouse Valley Way runs through.
The village centre is a conservation area. St Mary Magdalene Church is 14th century, and the Congregational chapel is unusual: a thatched, cottage-style building that started in a barn in 1808. Both are Grade II* listed.
Roxton Church of England Academy is the village primary. The Royal Oak pub closed in 2022, but a cafe and post office carry on in its old courtyard, and Roxton Garden Centre has a restaurant and a maze. The flower show every August has been going for more than sixty years.
Roxton is right next to the A421 and the A1 at the Black Cat, and the nearest stations are Sandy and St Neots, both on the East Coast Main Line. It suits people who need the A1 but want a small riverside village.
