Living in Renhold

Renhold doesn’t have one centre. It’s a parish of scattered “Ends” along the lanes north-east of Bedford: Salph End, Church End, Lane End, Top End, Workhouse End and Water End. The parish church is about four miles from Bedford town centre, and around 2,450 people lived here at the 2011 census.

That spread-out layout is a big part of the appeal. Older homes sit along country lanes, while The Spires and Cranbourne Gardens, built in the 2000s on the southern boundary, are reached through Goldington and feel much closer to town.

There’s history if you look for it: All Saints Church at Church End, the ruins of Renhold Castle, and Howbury Hall, rebuilt in 1849 and still a private house. George Joyce, born here around 1492, published the first English translation of the Psalms.

Renhold VC Primary School takes children from three to eleven, with Mark Rutherford School to the south for older children. The Polhill Arms on Wilden Road is a proper family local with a big garden and play area. The 28A bus stops at Salph End and Renhold on its way into Bedford.
