Living in Turvey

Turvey is about seven miles west of Bedford on the A428 Northampton road, close to the Buckinghamshire border. It’s a conservation area of around 1,200 people and one of the most complete villages we cover.

There’s plenty of history. The Mordaunt family held the manor from 1197. Turvey House was built in 1792, and Turvey Abbey, once a family home, is now a Benedictine monastery. All Saints’ Church has a 13th-century door, a Norman font and a medieval wall painting. And then there’s Jonah: a three-metre statue standing in the old mill pond since 1844, joined in 1953 by a companion called Eve.

It’s well set up for everyday life too. There are two village stores, one with a post office, a butcher, a village hall, and two pubs, the Three Fyshes, built in 1487, and the Three Cranes beside the church. Turvey Primary School is on May Road, with a pre-school and before- and after-school club.

The 41 bus runs to Bedford and Northampton. Turvey suits families and anyone who wants a full village with its own shops and school.
