Living in Bromham

Bromham is about three miles west of Bedford, and most of the parish sits inside a loop of the Great Ouse. It’s a big village, with almost 5,000 people at the 2011 census, and it’s in the Domesday Book as “Bruneham”.

Two landmarks stand out. Bromham Bridge is a medieval crossing with 26 arches, rebuilt in 1813 and now a scheduled monument; the A428 has bypassed it since 1986. Beside it is Bromham Mill, a Grade II listed watermill that stopped working in 1939 and was restored to grind flour again in 1980. Plans to redevelop the mill were approved in December 2025, so it’s worth checking what’s open before you visit.

The Swan on Bridge End is an oak-beamed inn that shows up on a map from 1798, and it’s handy for the Ouse Valley Way. Bromham CofE Primary School is on Grange Lane. The parish also has a village hall that hosts the annual fete, Bromham Park, Mill Meadow, playing fields, Fairy Walk and allotments.

Bromham is popular with families who want a proper village with its own school, a few minutes from Bedford.
