Living in Great Denham

Great Denham sits on Bedford’s western edge, in a loop of the River Great Ouse between Biddenham and Kempston. Until the 1990s it was farmland. Then came Bedford Golf Course, which opened in 1999, and a village grew up around it. It became a parish in its own right in 2007, and by the 2021 census more than 5,000 people lived here.

The land has a longer story than the houses. In 886 the treaty between Alfred and the Vikings set the boundary of the Danelaw along the Great Ouse, which put this stretch of river right on the frontier.

Day to day, Great Denham is well set up. There’s a parade of shops on Anglia Way with a Sainsbury’s Local, a cafe and an off-licence with a post office, a GP surgery on Kingswood Way, and a community hall. Great Denham Primary School opened in 2012. The country park has paths, a playground, a cafe and a games court, and a footbridge over the river links the village to Kempston.

The Stagecoach 8 bus runs into Bedford. It suits families who want a modern house with everything they need close by, and landlords who like newer homes with lower upkeep.
