Living in Flitwick

Flitwick is a town of nearly 14,000 people in Central Bedfordshire, about ten miles from both Bedford and Luton. It’s in the Domesday Book as a hamlet on the River Flit, and it has grown a lot in recent years, largely because of the station.

Thameslink runs every train. Off-peak there are four an hour north to Bedford, and southbound trains go through Luton, St Albans and central London to Brighton and Three Bridges. There’s a car park at the station and a night service most of the week. By road, the M1 at junction 12 is about four miles away.

Everyday shopping is well covered, with Tesco, Co-op and Aldi, a Friday market and shops near the station. The leisure centre, opened in 2015, has a 25-metre pool. For walks, Flitwick Moor is a nature reserve and SSSI, and Center Parcs Woburn Forest is on the outskirts.

The medieval church of St Peter and St Paul, Flitwick Manor and the Norman motte known as The Mount are reminders of the older town. Schools follow the three-tier system, with Redborne Upper School shared with Ampthill.

Flitwick suits London commuters who want more space than they’d get nearer the capital.
