Living in Cranfield
Cranfield sits between Bedford and Milton Keynes and is one of the biggest villages around, with more than 5,300 people at the 2011 census. Wharley End, once separate, now forms the north of the village.
It’s best known for Cranfield University, which grew out of the post-war College of Aeronautics and sits beside the village, with a technology park next to it. The airfield began life as RAF Cranfield in 1937 and is now owned by the university, used for business flying, private aviation and research. All of that brings a steady stream of staff and postgraduate students looking to rent.
It’s well equipped for a village. There are two small supermarkets, a post office in the Co-op, a coffee shop, takeaways, a GP surgery, a dentist and a pharmacy, three parks and a games area. The Cross Keys and the Swan are the two pubs, and Cranfield United play at The Nest. Cranfield Church of England Academy takes younger children, and Holywell School is changing to cover secondary age.
The Uno C1 bus links the village and university with Bedford and Milton Keynes. It suits university staff, students and families who want a well-served village between two towns.
