Living in Wilstead

On paper the parish is Wilshamstead, but almost everyone calls it Wilstead. It’s about five miles south of Bedford town centre, just off the A6 to Luton, with Wixams on the other side of the main road.

The village has more day-to-day life than many around Bedford. There’s a convenience store with a pharmacy, a sub post office, Indian and Chinese takeaways, a modern village hall on Cotton End Road, and Wilstead Primary School. The Jubilee Centre has a games area, and there’s a bowls club, allotments and playgrounds. Every July the village holds the Wilstead Ball.

Homes range from thatched cottages and old farmhouses around All Saints Church to estate housing built more recently. Herrings Green Activity Farm is on the eastern edge, which younger children tend to love.

Wilstead suits people who want proper village life but need the A6 and Bedford close by. It’s also handy for anyone commuting south towards Luton.
