Living in St Neots
St Neots is a busy market town in Cambridgeshire, with over 33,000 people at the 2021 census. It sits on the River Great Ouse about ten miles north-east of Bedford as the crow flies, with the A1 alongside and the A428 and A421 meeting at the Black Cat roundabout just to the south. Eaton Socon and Eaton Ford, on the west bank, were part of Bedfordshire until 1965.
The town is named after St Neot, whose bones were brought from Cornwall to the priory here around 980 and drew pilgrims for centuries. The parish church, rebuilt in the 15th century, is sometimes called “the Cathedral of Huntingdonshire”, and the Market Square, scene of a Civil War skirmish in 1648, was renovated in 2024 and 2025.
The station is on the East Coast Main Line. Off-peak, Thameslink runs twice an hour through London St Pancras, Farringdon and London Bridge to Gatwick, with extra Great Northern trains to King’s Cross at peak times. The 905 bus runs to Bedford and Cambridge.
There’s plenty to do: Riverside Park, Paxton Pits nature reserve with about 190 acres of lakes and woodland, the museum, and the Rowley Arts Centre with its cinema. Love’s Farm and Wintringham have added thousands of new homes east of the station, and Longsands and Ernulf academies are the secondary schools. It suits commuters and families alike.
