Living in Thurleigh

Thurleigh is about five or six miles north of Bedford, on quiet lanes a few miles off the A6. Around 700 people live in the parish, and part of the village is a conservation area. Many of its listed homes date from the 17th to the 19th century.

St Peter’s Church dates from around 1130 and is Grade II* listed, and there’s a windmill tower from about 1890 and the earthworks of a medieval castle. The bigger story is the airfield. RAF Thurleigh was built in 1941, and American B-17s of the 306th Bomb Group flew 341 missions from it. Today it’s a business park and Bedford Autodrome, and the 306th Bomb Group Museum opens free on Sundays from spring to autumn.

Thurleigh Primary School and pre-school take children from two and a half, and older pupils go to Sharnbrook Academy. There’s a village hall, a playing field club with cricket and football, and around 30 miles of footpaths and bridleways to explore.

The 28 bus stops in the village on its way between Bedford and Kimbolton. Thurleigh suits families and anyone after a quiet village with a bit of history.
