Living in Felmersham

Felmersham is about seven miles north-west of Bedford, and the Great Ouse wraps around it on the north, east and south. The parish takes in the hamlet of Radwell, and around 750 people lived here at the 2011 census.

It’s a lovely-looking village and a conservation area. St Mary’s Church, built around 1220 to 1240, is Grade I listed and often held up as a fine example of Early English architecture, especially its west front. There are 24 listed buildings in the parish, several of them thatched, and Felmersham Bridge, five limestone arches built around 1818, crosses the river towards Sharnbrook.

Across the river, Felmersham Gravel Pits is a Wildlife Trust nature reserve and SSSI. The Sun on Grange Road is a thatched 17th-century pub. Pinchmill Primary School serves the village, and secondary-age children go to Sharnbrook Academy.

There’s no village shop, so this is a place for people happy to drive into Sharnbrook or Bedford for the basics, in return for river views and a lot of peace.
